Big no from the Kings.

If the Kings are expected to keep rebuilding - but not be tanking - why specifically is Russell such a no?

Vilardi is absolutely staying on the NHL roster sure, but effectively other quality prospect in the Kings' system (including Turcotte and their selection this year) is much more likely to spend another year developing. It's a transitory year for the Kings: eating a year of dead cap to keep above the floor and insulate Bjornfot doesn't hurt them in the slightest.

It doesn't make fiscal sense for the Kings to trade for a 6/7 defenseman counting $4 million against the cap. They have additional cap space that they can use to their advantage. If the cap stays flat, there will be many teams looking to get their players signed and have to make some tough decisions. This will put the Kings in a good position to see what is out there that can work short and long term. Russell doesn't fit either of those options.
