I don't imagine Isles fans will love it, but it's something I can absolutely see Lou Lamoriello doing.

Weaponizing available cap space makes a lot of sense. However, I am wondering if this construct is something the Isles do given the logjam on their blueline🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔.... and although it saves them $1.5 million, ($2.5 million if they bury him) is that enough to do what they gotta do?

Taking on Boychuck without moving a contract back with a flat cap isn't the answer either (flat cap and all the crap that goes with it), as that could be riskier than I would want.

Somehow Melnyk's frugality has out the Sens is a very very enviable position. Making use of that position could be most useful. But not sure this is the fit.

Maybe there's a fit where New York adds some future assets and Ottawa takes Cal Clutterbuck? Two years of a 3.5mil cap hit, but only 2.5 per year in salary. His days of being a full time NHL player are pretty well over, but he's a good leader in the room and can be the 13th man. That's 5.5mil in savings for The Island, more if they bury Zaitsev.

I think the Sabres would make that trade. Not sure why the Sens wouldn't want to keep Tierney though and sign a free agent d to a longer term deal
