On paper OK, but shielding what rookies? Carrick is 4th year pro and Zaitsev will be 25 years old when the season starts. If you wanted vets, just keep Hunwick, Greening and Michalek. By the way Michalek has a NMC.

Zaitsev and Carrick aside, I think the most important D to protect is Morgan Reilly. Best way of accomplishing this is by not forcing him onto his off-side where he struggles, and giving him stronger partners than Marincin and Hunwick. Have a read of this article from ppp.

http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2016/8/9/12331450/examining-how-morgan-riellys-partners-affected-him

Can't pair him with hunwick if hunwick is playing somewhere else. It would be nice to trade for a younger better RHD than wideman but lets face it, their isn't much available. Wideman should be able to get the job done for 1 year, seems to have fallen down the depth chart, and probably wont be missed in calgary.

Also, having a veteran RH RW like Hemsky that can actually produce in the top six (unlike Michalek and Greening) will take pressure off Nylander and Brown. It should also prevent Babcock from playing Komarov on the top line on his off wing.

Those are my thoughts anyways.

Well Rielly won't be playing his off side.....LD Rielly, Gardiner, Hunwick...RD, Zaitsev, Carrick, Polak. maybe Corrado. Marincin played both sides last year. Hyman played RW last year (he's a RH), Soshivov can play both sides though a lefty. Same with Andreas Johnson. Leivo is a RH shot. Just don't think we need a Hemsky. The Leafs would have signed Parenteau if they thought they need a veteran RWer. Michalek plays both wings. He has a unwritten NMC from the Leafs (otherwise he wouldn't have waived his NTC from Ottawa last year). See you didn't include Marner at RW either.

Take a look at some random Dallas Rosters and look for Hemsky, not saying its right but to me most Dallas AGM want him gone. By giving them Greening and Corrado, Dallas saves 1 million in cap space and gets an OK D prospect.
