Description
With all current information available, there isn't any reason to consider that Winnipeg would even consider moving Laine, besides a TSN article likely made to ramp up clicks for TSN while Sportsnet and NBC get all of the playoff revenue. With that being said, Laine is already a bonafide all star 1st line winger at 22, and still improving. Just watching him for a few games makes it obvious that this kid hasn't even begun to reach his full potential, and he's already a BONAFIDE ALL STAR NEAR POINT PER GAME ALL STAR WINGER AT 22 YEARS OLD and has a top 5 shot in the entire league. Laine is an extremely valuable player. Full stop. You don't get players like this with a bunch of 28 year olds on expiring contracts and 5'7 midgets that haven't played a single hockey game against anyone older than 21 in their life.
If that's all that's available, I'm sure Cheveldayoff has absolutely no problems sleeping at night knowing he's stuck with this kid on his team another season.

If Montreal is serious about wanting Laine, and assuming he is actually available for whatever reason, it's not going to cost any less than a proven young player in a position where Winnipeg is lacking (Suzuki), a high level prospect in another position where Winnipeg is weak (Romanov), and a versatile roster player Chevy is high on (Armia).

One bad season over a year ago warped a lot of people's views on Patrik, but even in a "down" year he scored thirty goals. Talent like that isn't given away on a whim and if the day ever comes where Laine is traded out of Winnipeg, it could potentially be the biggest blockbuster of the decade.

Yup, 100% correct. I just did an ACGM myself trying to see if it's possible to make it work for the Habs without giving up one of Suzuki or KK. It was:

To WIN -
Danault ($1.5mil retained for current deal + extension 6 X $6)
Tatar ($1mil retained)
Caufield
Poehling
2020 2nd rd pick (CHI)

To MTL -
Laine
Lowry
Perrault

You can definitely say Habs are overpaying in this case, but without either Suzuki or KK. Jets probably just hang up the phone

I agree with most of what you said. You were a little harsh in your tones, but I agree to an extent. I am NOT saying the Canadiens will get Laine (or even that they are interested). He's a heck of a player. However, just because he plays for Winnepeg now doesn't necessarily mean he truly wants to be there. That is not just true for Laine, but true for all players playing on all teams in the NHL. North American pro sports have "drafts": a player cannot just pick where they want to play. Furthermore, there is the the prospect of his future salary. We all know that he is an exceptional talent, and with that talent comes a larger contract. He will demand more money, and the Jets will have to have internal discussions about how much they are willing to spend on him while being able to field a competative team. Look no further then Toronto, who has paid a lot of money for 4 offensive players, but probably won't have the success they are looking for until they shed salary and create a more balanced roster. I would not want to be in that position.

I am not saying that he will be traded (PLEASE do not say that I am saying that). I am just stating that if Wayne Gretzky once got traded, anyone can. But chances to win a Stanley Cup are all-too rare. Whether he is that piece that wins one for the Jets (or another team), time will tell.
