As a third party:
Pros for Anderson - Long track record of personal success (one of the most consistently above average goalies in the league the last six years) despite playing behind one of the worst defensive teams in the league for most of his career. Makes one million real dollars, coming off unreal playoffs (again, personally)
Cons for Anderson - Tough regular season last year both health and performance wise and only has one year left
Pros for Kuemper - Has one elite full season under his belt and has been good in limited appearances since. Lower cap hit than Anderson. Signed for an extra year
Cons for Kuemper - Has really only had one good full season. Was limited to twenty nine games (very good!) games last year, and has only cracked thirty games played once in his career (either due to injury or due to not playing very well)
I think at best it's a lateral move. Arizona would probably like the low real dollars and Toronto could appreciate the lower cap hit and extra term. But I think we're all putting the cart before the horse crowning Kuemper as a reliable starting goaltender aren't we? This is a guy who has been up and down most of his career, he's been pretty up recently but also has been injured a handful of times in his career at his point, and again, only has one season anyone could appreciably consider a "starter's load" of work. Meanwhile, Toronto (and mitigating circumstances) have stacked the deck in favor of Anderson. He's had tons of rest. The defense looks not terrible this year. He has a backup who can realistically start 20-30 games. Toronto is probably the best team in an all-Canadian division.
Basically I think the pure talent and certainty is immediately going to be downgraded for Toronto and while they get the extra year of Kuemper what's the point if they also have to hemorrhage other assets? I just don't see the motivation to jettison Anderson+ just for 500k and the extra year, given it probably makes your team worse.
