Description
luckily this UFA class is so poor that maybe it will get through to Holland that cap flexibility can be nice. the d is still a mess. DDK is still not a top pairing guy but I don't know what else to do. I think we would be pretty fortunate if Vegas took Helm. DET can't leave either Mantha or AA unprotected; there would be uproar. Have Hicketts, Russo, Renouf, Sadowy, and Svech competing for spots in camp and getting their feet wet with a couple games up with the big club.

Protected from Expansion:

Nielson
Mantha
Athanasiou
Nyquist
Tatar
Sheahan
Abldelkader

DeKeyser
Green
Sproul

Mrazek

Of the players I can see management considering to leave unprotected, I only see Las Vegas being interested in Green, Helm, Sheahan, Ouellet, and Jurco (probably in that order).

Yea, I don't think Helm will be drafted. Why protect Green? He only has one year left at 6m so I doubt Vegas will draft him. And if Vegas takes Green, there's another 6m Detroit could spend on a UFA or elsewhere.

he's our best Dman. Vegas could use him (depending on their strategy). They need to reach the cap floor. He'd be a great option b/c he only has one year left and is still a good player. If Vegas takes him I wouldn't be upset but what other defensemen would you even want to protect? Ouellet? I'd be fine with protecting Sproul and Ouellet.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE. Don't be another non informed hockey fan about the "floor". There are going to be so many high priced players for the Vegas to claim they could get 130 million without trying. And they also can sign UFAs.
I'm not saying that Detroit couldn't use Green, but the Wings aren't going to be Cup contenders next year. Why not leave him exposed and keep Ouellet? (there is no right or wrong answer). Why protect Sheehan? 3rd/4th centres are easy to replace (if he was taken)

I'll be as uniformed as I please, lol. Most of those players with big contracts that are going to be available probably wont be that good. That's why they'll be available. They may not be bad but most of them aren't going to be worth their AAV. If they're not that good, why would Vegas pick them? Green is still a dang good Dman.

The UFA class this year is quite poor.

I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I know who Vegas is going to choose but Green would be a very good pick for them. Vegas isn't going to be interested in drafting all the overpriced 28-35 year olds that teams are going to make available.

wassie2010. In my 435PM post, I said there was no right or wrong answer to Greene protection or exposure. I agree with you on the playing merits of Greene. But the logic of the "cap floor" is irrelevant. There are going to dozens of highly paid guys exposed, so Vegas is not going to have any problems getting to the floor.
