Description

The Calgary trade assumes the Flames will take a 2nd for Bennett and that they realize cap needs to go back and that Eakin is still useful as a 3rd/4th liner who can kill a penalty. With better linemates in Calgary (ie: no Okposo) he might generate more offense.

The LA trade assumes that the Kings have interest in ridding themselves of the Maata contract beyond this season.

With these deals and the Okposo/Hutton waive the Sabres add speed, grit and youth up front, they balance the L/R split on D and they show front office leadership by waiving two veteran players who are popular in the locker room but a drag on their teammates on the ice. There is no solution in net with these deals, but getting Hutton off the ice is the first step.

Finally, if these deals don't help the Sabres get into and stay in the playoff race, draft picks can potentially be recovered by dealing Hall, Staal and possibly Ullmark for higher picks and players like Sheahan, Rieder and Irwin for lower picks. Even Hutton, with retention, might be tradable at the deadline to a team looking for goalie depth for the playoffs.

I'd love to trade Maatta, but not at the cost of trading Wagner and adding Montour who we have no room for.
