Wondering if there is interest in Zach Smith? Expiring contract on LTIR, I think, is basically free cap space. Would think teams like TOR, LVG, WSH, NYI, TB, possibly other teams would have a level of interest in additional cap space. How much could be question.

I must not get how LTIR works because how is Zach Smith free cap space?

Smith doesn't free up cap space. The other team still needs to send a cap dump to the Hawks.

With that said...I think what you're trying to suggest is something TOR has done recently by having an LTIR contract in the summer. (Not z smith) having an LTIR contract in the summer allows a GM to play hard ball in negotiating with RFAs.

I could be wrong on this, don't know all the ins and outs of LTIR. My limited understanding is a team close to the cap during the year can exceed the cap by the amount of the LTIR minus how far they are from the cap. You want to be as close as possible to cap when placing the player on LTIR.

I don't understand what you mean by playing hard ball because of LTIR in summer. It is more difficult in summer because it is better to place the player on LTIR during year. LTIR is why TB traded for Gaborik and Nilsson. They can exceed cap by their combinations salaries.

Just from what I know (I think).
