Description
Signing Danault to an 8yr 32M deal (4M/yr cap hit) can be something that both sides can agree on.

From the Habs side, they know he’s a good center, solid shutdown capabilities, wins faceooffs, he’s francophone... he checks off a lot of boxes.

From an attitude standpoint, the Habs know they are getting someone who will give 110% every shift, and be a good example to any youth coming up into the lineup.

I would front load the deal.
Yrs1-4 at 5M
Yr5 at 4M
Yr6 at 3M
Yr7 at 2.5M
Yr8 at 2.5M

After 6yrs, he’ll have made 27M in salary. That’s an average salary of 4.5M, something I’m sure Danault can live with. After 6 yrs, he’ll be 35. If the Habs buy him out here, they’ll owe him 2/3 of the 5M for him to not even play (3.333M). If he’s bought out, he’ll have made 30.333M to have played 6 yrs. If not, he plays two more years at 2.5M in salary at a 4M caphit.

If Danault thinks he’ll be underpaid at 35 making 2.5M/yr, he can look around the league right now to see what kind of money 35yr old UFAs are making, because that’s what he would’ve been after a 6 yr deal.

There are currently only 2 NHL players making more than 2.5M/yr on 35+ contracts (Fillpula & Rinne).

Didn't he already decline a 5x6 deal from them?

Before the season, yes but with his performance he should’ve accepted it since he might get less now from the Habs

He's heading to free agency then. The C pool in free agency is weak this year, meaning a team in a dire need of center will overpay the guy. Danault's most likely a top3 guy in the market.

He’s leading all up upcoming UFA centers in +/-, 6th in scoring. With pandemic hurting teams financially, I don’t know if another team is willing to offer a player a 5-6 yr deal who has never scored more than 13 goals in a season, and put up 50 pts only once. He’s a good player and this is a fair contract offer.

Could another team offer more, sure. And if they do, then congrats to Phil for signing it. But I doubt it’s in a scenario as good as he’d have it here.

He can be a 3C on a winning team, or a 1-2C on a sub par team.

If he wants to win, he’ll take this deal. If he just wants to get rich, he’ll likely go somewhere else.
