To me, the reason to unload Loui and Roussell is because out of ALL years...this is the time to actually do a long term deal and NOT a bridge. I'm not crazy.
A.) VAN isn't strapped for cash as an organization. Not saying they like to waste money, but they have it.
B.) The lack of Cap space available around the league means many players will be forced to take discounts vs what they were expecting. Wait...is this counter intuitive? No, because
C.) IF you think Hughes/Pettersson are key pieces to your future, then don't allow them to "re-up" when the ESPN contract kicks in and the cap goes crazy. LOCK THEM DOWN!

Then as you suggest even though they're not contending this year. In approx. 3 years I think they should be contending and then will have Cap Space to spend because your core has already been paid.
