We want a depth forward, but thats a slight overpayment for Blackwell. I could see a Fleury-Blackwell trade with picks to balance it out.

honest question - why would NY move anyone?
it's not like that have anyone that would garner anything more than a conditional 4th...
and the Rangers don't really need more late round picks.

Because the players I traded are not part of the future core. Blackwell has had a good season (and is signed another year) so sell high now. Howden will be lost in expansion (hopefully) and these two trades get Gauthier back in the lineup (I love his game). Smith just opens up space for Reunanen so rangers can evaluate him before this summer to see if they want him long term or not (if not, trade him while he still is young and has some potential)
