Description

I think the Canucks might match at that price, but it at the very least you leave the cap situation of a division rival extremely tight. Should they not match, I think a 1st 2nd and 3rd from next year is a fine price, any higher levels probably isn't worth it. If they match, you also leave them having to plan to re-negotiate again with him in just two years when he could ask for an even higher price, giving no cost certainty.

I'm looking at a lot of Armchair GM's and most have Pettersson at 7-8M with term. Even if the Flames don't get him, it leaves them in a tighter position with a flat cap, and then the need to renegotiate in a few years. IMO there's a lot of benefit for CGY even if the Flames don't land him.

The problem with this plan is it also relies on moving enough cap out to make the offersheet. You chose to move Monahan here and if we fail to get EP40 then we are left with a giant hole
