Description
Playoff push for Dallas, rebuilding pieces for Arizona. Not only would this boost Dallas in net and on the PK with Smith, but would bring over a R-shot D as depth. For Arizona, they'd get 1 less year on goaltending cap with Lehtonen to bridge the gap for one of their younger prospects to take over. Nemeth has good potential as a big, stay-at-home D, is still young, and rights are still controlled (RFA). His upside certainly exceeds that of Schenn for their rebuild, and there's some chemistry there with former teammate Goligoski. The 3rd rd'er is necessary to offset current performance differences. Would also provide a cap savings to Arizona, which would be a huge part of this deal considering Arizona projects to be over at season's end. Thoughts?

Mike Smith hasn't played a meaningful game in 5 years. I don't see a lot of change happening from this trade for Dallas.

Point taken. Still, I believe I'd take a chance. Stars skaters have started to come together, finally pretty healthy, line continuity, etc. Goaltending though has remained ok to subpar. Believe this team could do something, but after a couple years now of the state of the goaltending I believe the team would be a lot more confident with a change back there. Smith is one option, mainly because his contract could help offset Lehtonen's (there aren't many out there that can). He's familiar with Dallas as well since we drafted him, and he got a few seasons in prior to departure. Trade could help Arizona too with both cap and assets coming over. Bottom line - Dallas won't go too much farther with current makeup, so likely a deal is in order, and this to me might be the most feasible. Anything big with big-name players is going to have high costs that I don't believe Nill would be willing to pay.
