Why not just trade Marner ? He doesn't produce in the playoffs and is a defensive liability

Trading Marner fixes the PP and cap situation. Marner is rather dumb kid who wants to be the centre of attention. He actively made it harder for Matthews and was arguably the worst player for the Leafs in the series
