I had discussed this at length after it happened and dug real hard to find the details that were being spewed out every once in a while and being the obsessed MTL fan I was, I scoured the internet and here's what I could put together from most verified sources (But ultimately a couple smaller details were not from verified sources):
MTL wanted two things to start negotiations, Draisaitl and the 4th overall. Draisaitl was a no from the start with EDM so no deal would happen there if MTL didn't bend. Plus Edm wanted at least one of their bigger contracts leaving in order for it to work for them. Meaning it had to be at least one of Hall, Eberle, Nugent-Hopkins or Klefbom. EDM and MTL ended up agreeing in principle to Klefbom , Hall plus the 1st round pick for Subban but MTL had to also include their 1st rounder 9th overall and possibly a secondary prospect, which both GM's never ended up actually getting to discuss since it was of little value in the bigger picture. The final caveat was if they fully agreed on the trade at that point, Dubois had to be available with that pick as well, if not MTL was more then likely not going to make the deal as they coveted Dubois as one of the main reasons for making this trade. As the time started ticking down and they still hadn't come to a final agreement, both ended up wanting to wait until its was EDM's turn to choose before finally cutting the deal if they still wanted to at that point. Both were not convinced yet and leaning towards not making it but were still open to the idea of it. The minute CLB chose Dubois with the 3rd, Habs apparently weren't interested in making the trade anymore and ultimately Chiarelli was neither. Realizing Subban's 9M was just too much for them to take on when big contracts to Draisaitl and McDavid were coming soon. Also apparently MTL wasn't willing to retain salary nor take on cap dumps in order to help EDM's cap situation so as much as it was technically "close" to a deal, in reality too many factors from the start that weren't met, doomed the deal from realistically happening. I get the sense knowing Bergevin is a "rather safe then sorry" type GM, he would of ultimately declined it seeing as he wasn't 100% sold from the beginning anyway.
Ultimately if the deal was still valid with Dubois not being available anymore MTL chose Subban for Weber over Hall, Klefbom and Puljujarvi for Subban, Sergachev and a prospect like Andrighetto. Only time will tell which one was the better offer.
