Description
The goalie decision is the biggest one facing the Pens right now. Freddie may get a better offer somewhere else, but I see this as a potential prove it contract that coincides with Jarry's contract and he can be a great veteran presence for Jarry. Kuemper, Driedger may be other options as well, but Kuemper would have to be in a trade and not sure Pitt has what Arizona would want. Driedger is most likely going to find himself in Seattle, which takes him out of the equation. Ideally, the 1B or backup goalie will have an equal or lesser value than Jarry's contract.

As for the signings/makeup of the team. First line is great, 3rd line could work if Poulin is ready for the jump, if not put Freddie back there. BART is BART. The question is would Ritchie work on the second, or does McCann move up?

The trade, well Boston is likely looking for a LHD and Pitt needs to move out a LHD. Maybe it needs some picks involved somewhere. Ritchie has dropped off, so his contract value is very hard to predict.

Ritchie isn't a 2nd line player, he's bottom 6. He has no business there.

As for Andersen, I don't see the penguins paying him that to be backup. Especially for 2 years.
I think they are happy with their combo to be honest. That might be hard for people to accept, but it is what it is.
They know they have youth there, it's just a matter of when. You have to trust what they have done there. Gustavsson as looked great for OTT. I don't think you'll see that youth this year, but I also don't see them rushing out to sign guys to term.

So you have not been listening to Burke and Hextall than? I am pretty sure they have both said they are looking into the goalie situation. I would be very shocked if the Pens go into the season with Jarry and Desmith being the goalies. Not to mention that Larmi is gone and isn't coming back. D'Orio is not going to be an NHL goalie. Clang and Blomqvist both have a few years before they can even get a sniff at the NHL and at best they will be backups. I don't disagree about Ritchie being a bottom 6 player, but he has the size that Pitt needs and wants. It is more about finding someone that could use Petterson and the Pens getting a need coming back. As I said they could move McCann up to the 2nd line, but Sully likes him with Carter.

I don't think McCann will be here.
As far as Burke and Hextall, they say things, but saying and doing are two different things. The team likes Jarry. They know when he's playing well, he's capable of shutting it down. As they both said, they aren't in the playoffs and 1st place without him. You can't look past that.
You have to hope you can work with him to solve the issues. But the scape goat of him being the reason they lost should be put to rest before you chase a capable guy out chasing after rats to bring in.
It's not like Andersen has faired any better as a goalie.
That is really the issue. Is what you find really any better than what you have and is it worth a significant amount of your already tight cap. There are just some truths to that.
Fact is Jarry didn't cost this team the playoffs. There is a lot of blame to go around on that. The 4th line was arguably the best line of the team. That's where the problems start. Hard to put it on the goaltender when that's the case.

I'm not blaming Jarry and I am not pinning it on him. I thought I explained it enough, the reason the team goes after Anderson isn't to chase Jarry out of Pittsburgh, but to support him. Young goalies need a veteran presence to help. Look what happened to Murray once Fleury was moved. Sure we can possibly attribute his decline to the passing of his father, but not having a good (doesn't have to be great) veteran to push him and support him didn't help. I would much rather the Pens go after someone like Anderson or even Halak, than a goalie similar age to Jarry. I want Jarry to be the Pens starter, he is a great kid and I think the skill is there, he just needs better support than what DeSmith can give him.

I think the Murray thing was more the whole development guy leaving with MAF. There are stories out there on that. It was reportedly a huge blow.
They made a coaching change this year there. They also chased out Gonchar, which was dumb but whatever. Someone's head was going to role because coach stick check needed someone to blame other than himself.

It is what it is. Gonchar made defensemen better. There is no doubt on that. The people developing players matter.

At the end of the day, it's not the backup pushing that player and making them better. The backup, like the starting goalie, is really counting on the development and coaching staff to help them do that.
The problem arises when they don't trust the guy behind them. Which is what happened when DeSmith went down. They had no one. I don't think it's a matter of DeSmith was of no support to Jarry. I don't buy that case. I don't see Andersen who would probably try to beat him out for the job so he can have a starting job again, helping. Just being honest.
