Koskinen's contract only lasts for 1 more year. They can upgrade next summer - why downgrade in the meantime? Makes no sense.

And, there's a reason why Rangers are willing to move on from Georgiev.

Koskinen is older and a pending UFA. So regardless of who is better right now, there's a good chance Georgiev is the better option moving forward.
Edmonton needs a solid starter long term. They've juggled goaltenders for years and could use some stability with someone who has their best years in front of them.
Is that Georgiev? Debatable. But it's not Koskinen or Smith.
