Description
Kings are down to 34 players in training camp, six of which were placed on waivers today (shown in LTIR).

Thomas and Athanasiou are both still out with injuries, but are still technically on the training camp roster. Thomas will likely be returned to Ontario before the end of camp. Byfield is the only one of the "kids" left in camp.

On offense, the top 9 are set, and Moore is a sure thing for the 4th line. I don't see Athanasiou losing his spot either, so the final three forward spots are up for grabs by five players (Lizotte, Lemieux, Grundstrom, Wagner, and Byfield).

For defense, the top six are set, and the Kings are deciding between Strand, Wolanin, and Maatta for the 7th defenseman spot.

I believe Wagner is going to beat out Grundstrom. I’m 50/50 whether they keep up Byfield. A 4C might be a great way to break into the league with sheltered matchups. Although I see him alternating out with JAD and Kupari. That’s probably it for Lizotte even though he’s done fairly well.

Reports from Hoven are that Lemieux is a lock for the lineup, so that leaves 2 spots. The coaches really like Lizotte, so I think he'll probably get one of them. I think JAD's demotion cemented his spot on the roster. I don't think Byfield will start in the NHL, so I think it's a coin flip right now between Wagner and Grundstrom. A good quote from camp the the other day was "You can't teach speed" so I give the slight edge to Wagner unless Grundstrom shows something special over the last couple days of camp.

This is just my opinion, but that 4C is a great opportunity for some good experience for Byfield, Kupari, and JAD. Lizotte is a very capable 4C and has been good in camp, but I think it would be a missed opportunity if he gets most of the starts. At the trade deadline they can replace Lizotte with another 4C if they want a veteran for a playoff push.

Byfield needs as much ice time as possible. He's better off playing 20+ minutes every night in the AHL than 10-12 minutes in the NHL on the 4th line. The Kings brass wants the waiver exempt kids (except Vilardi and Bjornfot, who are already NHL regulars) playing together in the AHL under the developmental coach they hired.

Some of the kids might get call-ups to fill in for injuries, but with a healthy lineup, they're all going to be playing in the AHL.
