Description
A hot topic of discussion these days.

A couple of scenarios to land Fiala.

Picks + Prospect or Player, Prospect + early 2nd?

Completely hypothetical, like all ACGM's. Just curious what the fans would prefer.

My take on the players:

Fiala: Legit top 6 player with 400 GP under the age of 25 that is finding his groove. Playing with Mathew Boldy and Frederick Gaudreau (according to Daily Faceoff). Plays on 2nd PP unit. Having a career year on an underrated Minnesota team. I'm sure Guerin would love to keep him long term. Due to cap constraints from recent buyouts, unfortunately, Fiala might end up being a cap casualty.

Formenton, 22 years old, (2nd round pick in 2017) is fast. The definition of speed. Needs to work on his finish and offensive hockey sense. Absolutely could hit the 20 goal mark and 50pts given opportunity. Needs to capitalize on his opportunities. Top 6-9 player for sure. RFA next year. Probably land a 3x3 contract.

Bernard-Docker, 21 years old, (1st round pick in 2018) is smart. Not flashy or "skilled" by any means. Just smart. Not the biggest D man (6'1") and certainly won't throw his weight around unless necessary. He makes the smart play and has a great first pass. Looks incredibly calm and poised for his age. Not quite ready for the big leagues this year. Should be ready for next year. Needs to add strength.

2nd round pick in 2022 could be from 34-40 range.

My preference? Keeping NHL players on the roster is a must for Ottawa. Formenton still has room to grow and is likely to hit the 40 point mark next season. I'd much prefer to send the prospect and player (actual trade made). It would make a little more sense given the cap situation Minnesota is in considering their dead cap issues for the next 3-4(?) years.

The picks trade would also keep JBD in the minors whilst giving Thomson some reps in the NHL. Switching them back and forth if necessary.

That being said, Ottawa has more than enough players and prospects to spare. I wouldn't be upset at the trade of Formenton and JBD + early 2nd... I know Ottawa is giving quality to get quality. Specially when rounding out their top 6. Might be other options available form other teams, too (PHI - Konecny and VAN - Garland).

Ottawa could also choose to be patient with their prospects. Waiting on the likes of Ridley Greig, Sokolov or even Jarventie to become that top 6 forward they are looking for.

None, of these happen and you're overpaying for Fiala, also you're overpaying to dump Zaitsev. I would rather just buy him out or wait till the next year where he is not a lot and you might get like a 7th if you half retained it.

Zaitsev has negative value. There is no team in their right mind that would trade anything of value for his contract. Even if he is on the last year of his contract (you'd hold onto him next year overplay anybody else)? Buying him out makes the most sense realistically and financially, you're right. But, given Ottawa has assets to burn, why not attempt to rid the contract for a 2nd rounder and a guy who has no shot at making the team until 2024 regardless. How does having Zaitsev on the team on a nightly basis help this team win now when you have Thomson and JBD ready to go?

The Fiala trade is fine in my opinion. Fiala is a legit top 6 player. I would do that for a guy that is arguably better than anything else on the LW next to Tkachuk. It gives Stutzle someone to play with other than Formenton. Specially if Ottawa lands someone like Giroux in UFA in the off season or Slafkovsky in the draft.

It also is Ottawa's 2023 1st round pick that is top 10 protected. So if Ottawa does STB next season, it won't be that detrimental.

Point is can't hoard picks and prospects forever.

I know it can't hoard but Gustavsson probably backs up Forsberg next season with Murray wherever and Zatisev does block a ton of shot's and battles through the game well, I'd rather keep Formenton cause you need forward depth and he could be really good plus he has to be paid and MInni might not be ableoto afford that. It would also only take a 2nd to dump Zatisev.

If Murray is healthy, he'll play. He's shown he can still be a legit goalie when healthy.

Zaitsev blocks shots and battles for lost pucks because he gives up the puck most of the time in the defensive zone. He's got no pass and is just as bad in the O-zone.

Formenton would not be a part of the deal if they take the 1st deal offered (the official trade made). Minny has cap space next year ($9,2 million). Enough to be able to afford Fiala. Formenton isn't going to get more than 3 million per on a bridge deal. I don't know how you got it in your head that they have 0 cap space.

It would make sense to move Fiala because they want to at least obtain some sort of form of value in a trade. They still own his rights. They can still bring him to arbitration.

Zaitsev is worse than Ghost which I know is the basis for your logic on the trade.

You carry 3 goalies before waiving Gus, but I don't think Matt Murray plays for Ottawa next year.

As far as Fiala is concerned, I actually wonder if Connor Brown is involved there. I would rather just keep him, but if the Sens are seriously on Giroux's radar this summer, you're not keeping Brown on his next contract.
