Description
Miller covers a top 6C spot for the next 7 years and Johnson can fill in as a top 6 playmaker to replace Voracek on the 2nd line and eventually Gaudreau on the first line when he starts to regress. Chinakhov enters as a 3rd line winger when Voracek expires after this season. If Jiricek isn't ready then Bean re-enters the lineup and either a vet is signed for near minimum and short term or Christiansen is carried as a 7th dman.

As for the trade, money has to be taken back over at least the next 2 years so that Columbus can afford to re-sign Miller if the CBJ are going to invest anything of value into acquiring him. Trading away Voracek to make space is simply too expensive and would close to double the price paid to acquire Miller in the first place. I realize both of the players being sent out were just re-signed this off season, but Gaudreau changes a lot of the team's planned future. This trade also leaves the Jackets with $18M + cap increase for re-signing Sillinger, Johnson, Marchenko, Robinson and Blankenburg in 2024-25.

I certainly don't mind that return package, but I'm still struggling to understand why Miller to Columbus makes sense

I think it works in this scenario. Pretty much solidifies their top 6 centers for the remainder of his contract and makes it so they don't have to rely on Johnson being more than the playmaker we already know he is. The lineup is solid all the way through as it matures and the choice between Jiricek, Ceulemans and Boqvist is made. The only other scenarios I would prefer to this are acquiring Larkin or Barzal and those just don't seem nearly as likely.

If the Canucks had their choice, they'd definitely pick Jiricek out of the three, but if the Jackets are only offering Boqvist, I'm sure they won't be complaining

Boqvist is more about making the money work. His contract is great, but they'll need almost every dollar they can get to extend Miller.
