Description
This post is for the start of the season only.
Not doing TDL or Draft day deals just building to start the year.

Laval Rocket 2022-23 :

Slavkovsky- Stephens - Ylonen
Bourque - Schnarr - Heineman
Teasdale - Simmoneau - Belzile
Condotta - Poirer-Martell
Francis

Ghule-Barron
Norlinder-Bowey
Leiskanen -Schuneman
Fairbrother

Poulin(Dobes come year end after he signs ELC)
Vrbetic

By AHL standards this is really good actually
Given Dobes is a top goaltender in the NCAA on a team that's half way through a rebuild similar to what Primeau went through before turning Pro after 2 years when he won the Mike Richter award for to Goalie. I see Dobes in a similar position on a team that has nothing to offer him and leaving because of it.

I mean its one thing if its a top NCAA team but Ohio University have made 5 playoffs since 2005 losing in the 1st round 3/5 times and the truth is they're not equipped to win the Frozen Four (2 appearances all time both loss's).

I think Dobes will join Laval at the end of the season to help The Rocket on a playoff push.
He's legit and i think could help Laval in the long run as Poulin has a history of choking when games count.
Vrbetic's still young about 2-3 years behind Dobes

Now MTL if need be can call up as needed with many ELC waiver exempt players.
Primarily this year should be about building value in the 10 UFAs we have the next 2 years.

Now onto to the NHL roster and 2 objections im sure to have.
Mysak>Evans just makes sense letting Mysak grow while any issues could benefit us.
He'll have Monahan on standby and Stephens after that if need be.

Can Mysak handle the Faceoffs and Center Responsisbility?
Look at the IIHF All Star Line up's history and ask that again.
Mysak and Mctavish the Bulldogs 3rd and 2nd line Centers took 2/3 Forward spots this year.
Others Scorer more then Mysak and we left out because Mysak's Faceoff Win rate's were ridiculous.
That final game in Sweden i heard the announcer say 73% on the night .
Beyond that he finished 15th in Faceoffs in the OHL on a Memorial Cup Final Team.
He's on like his 14th month straight of playing and is still training for Camp for a spot.
That's some next level dedication you dont see too often last i remember being Lehkonen.

At this point you're either Sold on Mysak using this window to establish himself.
Or your not and that's ok too this is just a prediction based on the Camp i feel he's about to have.

Xhekaj was a Final Cut last year sent down to the OHL where in 18 games he was traded after matching his last seasons point total with 17 points.
It earned him a trade to a top contender the Bulldogs playing Blueline for Mysak's team.
Xhekaj had to switch sides to play top pair RD beside Staois who took CHL player of the year.
Xhekaj had an amazing playoff run with 6 goals,16 pts in 18 games and 5 pts in 5 Memorial Cup games.
Against the WHL MVP Kaiden Ghule having an amazing year of his own Xhekaj not only shut him down.
He also set up the GWG to Mysak to send Hamilton to the Memorial Cup Final vs Saint John.

Given MTL's RD hole and that Xhekaj's style projects him as a 4th/5th Defensman .
I dont see the point in holding him down so Wideman can get minutes.
Especially when he's offering just as much if not more on Special teams with his Howitzer.
He's Physical and plays a Weber style protective game of the Goalies.

Bringing Ghule up makes no sense when you can have him and Barron eat up top minutes.
Let Slavkovsky, Ylonen, Ghule and Barron get used to working together on Special teams.
Then after the 2023 draft we'll have all sorts of spots open they can claim after we profit of UFA's

Does this build take more time and put emphasis on top players getting top minutes? Yes.
But it also see's Value in building up the contracts we have to offload for these kids to play in MTL
Moving Forward without paying to do it , but instead being paid to do it come TDL

P.S : Cap was left for Byron (doubtful he'll return) and Monahan. If they both return its RHP and Byron i send down keeping Monahan up to play 4th C pushing Mysak to LW and Pitlick to the Press box until the TDL.

MTL
  1. Martinez, Alec
  2. 2023 1st round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
-Top 10 protected pick but if VGK switched picks their 2024 1st is unprotected and they give up a 3rd in 2023.

VGK in their cap situation last i checked even with Lehner,Patrick and Weber on LTIR that puts them 6.8m over cap with 20/23 players signed and Hague to still sign.

Shaving 3.550m off their cap and getting a Center with Term at at cheap cap helps them avoid having to give away a MAF or pay to move a Pacioretty next year as each year they purge a great talent to remain cap compliant.

Cheapest way VGK will dump cap IMO
Someone's gotta go and the only other player that could clear the same amount of cap is Karlsson who's on a Neal like Decline with few interested in that term.
VGK
  1. Evans, Jake
Additional Details:
Injury Prone sure but if he gets injured he's on IR if not then he's rebounding his value for next years TDL

Either way it helps MTL with the tank or helps us next year at the TDL whe we shop him.
2.
MTL
  1. Bäck, Oskar
  2. 2023 4th round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
B+ Prospect and a Mid round pick seem about right.
DAL has been kicking the tired on Allen since last TDL. While VGK makes sense and few other as well. I feel the team guy who supports the starter is the guy to play behind Ottinger who showed last Playoffs he's a bonafid top tier starter in the NHL.
DAL
  1. Allen, Jake
Additional Details:
MTL isnt asking the farm cause the prospect we got address's a need and he'll be ready just as Armia is checking out with only 1-2 years term likely moved at a TDL with 50% RS.

Hughes always says he'd rather a player who's developed and a year or so from Pro level over picks at the same level.

I'd say there's a good chance that will land them three lottery picks this year.

Wait, hold on a second what the hell is that Martinez trade??

-Zero chance that Xhekaj starts in Montreal, -40% chance he starts on a second pairing. He had a good run in the OHL but that doesn't mean he's NHL ready just because he's big.
-Mysak isn't ready for NHL time and even if he was, playing 6 minutes a games on a fourht line is useless for his development. Wouldn't be surprised if he's Laval bound and takes big minutes there.
-Where's Mesar? He's already played 2 season in Slovakian's first pro league, he's ready for AHL minutes.
-Trades are oof.
-Vrbetic is going to start in Trois-Rivière otherwise he wouldn't have been offered a two-way AHL deal.

-i'll be back for you when he does. Most of you said he wouldnt make it past the first round of cuts last year too when he was on an invite. I've been backing him for a while and will continue to do so as he overachieve's at every turn. That Shot , his Physicality and Shot blocking factored in with his ability to play LD and RD without a break in offensive productions Pace. Given he outplayed NHL D last camp only sent back to overachieve for a Memorial Cup Run (which he did) its not shocking to think the 2nd last prospect cut in last years camp would make the cut this year. Escpecially given our RD Depth issues having a D who plays both sides that well is a no brainer.

-Danault started off on 4th line Center after injuries took out Mitchell then when DD went down he permanently replaced him and within 12 months of taking 3rd he took #1 Center from Chucky. Everyone makes these assumptions based on everything but the player themselves and what they're ready for. A Projected 3rd line Center getting a start at 4th line isnt a waste and thinking it is makes me question your grasp on the ice time difference in MTL between those lines (90 seconds or 1 to 1 and a 1/2 shifts on average under Julien Ducharme and St Louis ). We havent played a limp behind 4th line since Travis Moen was in MTL as all our Coaches rotate 4 lines.(what varies is how much 1st and 2nd gets not 3rd and 4th)

-You cant be serious Hughes didnt even see it as an option stating "Mesar will play in the OHL or AHL next year. " followed by "Slavkovsky will play in the NHL or AHL next year" as per his radio interview with Bob Mckown on TSN690 so i dont believe i'll humor this anymore as its clear the GM didnt even consider it

-TBH same was said of Mcniven but the reality is pretty simple as Practicing against AHL players >Playing in a ECHL game. He played 27 games over 3 years there with 22/27 in a single year over 3 different ECHL teams after Kinkaid was buired. Despite sharing the role with Primeau and Lindgren for years they knew becaus of Call ups and Injuries he'd get to play. The moral of the story is more icetime isnt always better if the Goalie your developing isnt a projected starter. There's more to being a good back up then people think about as Starters are often in their own heads foccused on the task at hand its the Goalie's Back Up who is usually the one working with the team on their shots .

I mean unless you're arguing Vrbetic has Starter Potential
I'm working under the assumptions were' grooming him to play behind Dobes in Laval like Mcniven did Primeau?

VGK is a team thats cap screwed right now
It just seemed like an easy target to acquire a 1st.
Given how poorly their teams contract situation has been managed.
I wouldnt be shocked to see VGK decline sharply in a bad season then anyone else with a 1st who would trade.

Coulda been anyone , i've tried it with Zaitsev and had success in the past
Then you do your mini retooling this summer and now you guys want to keep him.
Evans seemed to fit the bill as our cheapest player who's actually productive in the role he plays

Main goal wasnt the trades though the draft picks were whether it be our position in the tank or players we intend to flip at the TDL acuqiring us picks.
