Description
Blais- need to admit that he's not a top 6 player...reality is he's a bottom 6 guy on an expensive contract (for that role)...who (due to return from tough injury) is not yet ready for the NHL grind. And even if he finds his game (real quick) and plays a real good 4RW, there are cheaper options- and they will not extend him next year anyway. Test the waiver wire now and start accumulating CAP.

Hajek- other than his height and weight, there is no measurable or intangible metric by which Hajek is better than Zac Jones...and it's not even close! Worse than a bad trade is a trade which a team continually tries to convince itself they didn't get beat...never gonna happen here- move on. Want to hold on to Hajek as 7D? fine. I would send him to Hartford (test waivers) after the WPG game. And roll with 6D until Nov west coast trip...all in the interest of accumulating CAP. That gets the team into December- where they can evaluate more clearly what is needed for the playoff push. Might be rolling the dice with 6D (few occasions)...but Hartford is a short flight away.

The issue is they REQUIRED to have a 23 man roster. So unless they can take on a LTIR contract either Blais or Hajek would need to be on the roster. 7th D men are typically guys like Hajek or Tinordi who shouldn’t play often but also aren’t guys that could benefit from more AHL time. Blais will fill the Reaves role moving forward and that Reaves money will go elsewhere after this season is my assessment. I don’t think they ever intended on Blais being more than a bottom 6 guy who they plug in the top 6 from time to time. Buch couldn’t be kept for longer than a season and was also asking for more than he got it the end. Also, no teams were interested in him so it would have been a rough attempt to move him this year. Necessary loss. The TB trade was awful, Hajek hasn’t been good, Nils took way too long to get to this level and now we have better, the other pieces were meh and we gave up too much. Hopefully the 1st from DAL can become something worthwhile.

I do believe a 22 man roster is an option- at least the beat writers have been reporting that Drury is considering it. And the sooner NYR face the music and move on from these 2 terrible trades- the better. They have won their fair share of trades and as a result have a team entering its contention window...no need to ruin that by continually forcing round pegs into square holes- just move on!

Sounds like he might be trying to acquire a LTIR contract then. 22 active players plus an LTIR guy. That would be great. Hajek I would be good to move or lose. Blais I think is very serviceable, he was good before the injury and probably just needs a few weeks of intense hockey to be back.

On his game, he is very serviceable...but how long is it going to take for that to happen? And for a team in a CAP crunch how much $ can be stacked up on the 4th line? This is where the Goodrow contract is killer...another serviceable player- but at least 1.5M per overpaid for what he does.

BTW, the limit of an NHL roster is 23 players...but the roster itself has to be at least 20 players.

Can’t disagree but if we also have the best 4th line in the league, they will not only score more than they allow, wear down the opponent’s D physically, create PP time by drawing penalties. There’s value there that we don’t see on the surface. And being one of the top PP teams in the league that’s very valuable. As for timeline, he’s apparently ready to rock, he’s likely holding back all the big heavy hits in the preseason as it’s highly frowned upon to be smashing guys the way he does. Building chemistry with line mates usually take a few weeks of practice and games so I would expect things to happen pretty soon. I wouldn’t think too much into it till 8-10 games in. If he is bad after 6 games in regular season then the waiver wire should be a thought. The roster is built on forechecking so I doubt he will be sacrificed so quick though. Trochek was added because of his physical play, his offensive side and faceoffs are no worse than Strome. He’s probably an upgrade all around.
