Hard to see why NYI is making such a big splash in the trade market if they didn't think they could re-sign Tavares next year. There's no way NYI would just let JT hit free agency for nothing going back.

That's not to say DET can't attract a good free agent. I just can't see NYI letting JT get away, especially now that they're moving asset(s) to keep him.

I'm going to say DET can't attract an elite FA like Tavares. There would be so many better options. Detroit fans are still living in the days where they were a destination for FA's and viewed as competitive. Maybe you could overpay significantly for a okay UFA and get him to come but not one of Taveres' ilk.
