Description
Given the incredible start and depth of the roster this year, to me BOS has the ability to contend for a legitimate cup run, and being this could be the last chance for some guys to win it, some uncertainties with Pasta's contract negotiations, lots of guys with expiring deals, and limited cap space next year because of the 4.5mil bonus hit from Bergeron & Krejci - might as well just go for it and put this team in the best possible position to win it.

Not 100% sure on the value for Kane but I think this is reasonable. Let me know.

Can't have ARZ retain Kane again, but the cap does work in the end. Kane will have a 2.625mil caphit, so BOS will have $20,833 in space.

I see NSH as a bubble team, so I could see them spending a mid round pick for some forward depth and test their luck for the playoffs. If not NSH, then the Smith trade could be for any team looking for forward depth at a caphit of 2.6mil

A first line of Marchy - Bergy - Kane that only costs 11mill is totally sick lmao. We are blessed by Bergeron taking such a discount, even with his performance bonus putting us over next season.

That is an awesome move to grab Kane for the playoff push and puts them over the top... just an insanely deep top 9 and not to mention the PP potential.

I am a little hesitant to give up that much for a Kane rental because you would really be leaving the cupboard bare for next season assuming Bergeron and Krejci retire. I wonder if those assets would be better spent going after a guy like Bo Horvat to play RW on the top line with Marchand and Bergeron this year and then replace Bergeron after this season. I think it would go a long way in convincing Pasta to sign long-term here knowing he has center stability. Horvat, Zacha, and Coyle next year is probably the best case scenario for next year down the middle.

I understand looking into the future especially considering that there are a lot of uncertainties, but ultimately no one knows how things will work out in the future. At least you can control the present. And to me this BOS team won't be this good/deep in a long time again, so going all in for this year makes sense to me. I for one have been very hesitant in previous years about going all in, but this year, knowing what we do know (Lots of guys on expiring deals, uncertain Pasta negotiations, performance bonus penalty next year limiting the cap, etc.), I'm not opposed to it. That's why it may seem like an overpay for some BOS fans, but at least this offer will beat other bidders for sure.

Passed it by some CHI fans and they like the offer a lot - https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/3765473

One thing I don't get with trading for Horvat; he's a pending UFA so if BOS wants him they can keep the assets and sign him for free, and he's a predominant centre so I don't believe he'll play as well on the wing, especially on his off-wing. I'm fine with Bergy & Krech as the top6 centres going into the playoffs, and if one of them goes down to injury, Zacha can move up to that spot.

If you want my prediction, Krejci will retire but Bergy will want to keep playing. Then you have Bergy and Zacha as the top6 centres next year. However, if BOS wins the cup this year then I think there's a good chance Bergy will retire too. But at that point, who cares if the team is bad, they just won a cup lol. A retool looks imminent anyway.

It makes a lot of sense to grab Kane from that perspective - it is the deepest Boston team we have had in a long time and this could be the last run at the cup for this core group. Kane puts them over the top... its one of the few teams I think Kane would waive his NTC for and I think the deal you suggested gets it done.

I think any team that gets Horvat is going to have to give up assets for him. 27 year old top-6 centers don't hit the market often... its bad asset management. The last time it happened was probably Tavares and that was lesson to the NYI to either extend before they hit the UFA market or deal them for whatever you can get. Whoever locks up Horvat will make a trade and have an extension in place when they make the trade (similar to what the Bruins did with Lindholm).

I could see Bergy continuing to play if they don't win the cup this year, but I agree Bergy/Krejci/Foligno all retire if they win a cup this season. Krejci is definitely done after this year. Hopefully Pasta, Lysell, McAvoy, Lindholm, Zacha, and Swayman can form a new core for the next 10 years to build around like we've had with Bergy, Marchand, Krecji, and Rask for the last decade. There are opportunities for the young guys to step up.
