Description
This is my take on the Carolina Hurricanes acquiring Bo Horvat that could reasonably be the piece they're missing to have a shot at competing for the Cup. He could easily fill the role of 2nd line C on the team, KK has been fine in my opinion from an on ice level prospective but the fact that he's not producing despite having good possession numbers means he's probably better suited for a bottom six role at this point of his career. Horvat could also slot into the 1st PP unit replacing Noesen in front of the net.
The team also features Pacio's return, I think he could be optimal on a line with Aho e Teavu (and on the 2nd PP unit) with Svech and Necas reuniting on the 2nd line.
Stastny would be a surplus at that point and it would be a good trade chip if moved to a playoff team in need of a bottom line player to booster the lineup, I have WPG here but it could be anyone who's willing to trade for him.
I could also see a trade for one of the goalies if Kochetkov keeps playing well because of cap shenanigans even if Gardnier LTIR should be enough to cover the number, at least I think

Why? If Carolina wanted an upgrade at 2C, they could just move Necas across. He's having a better season than Horvat, is already on the roster, and is a better fit for the long term. Horvat also doesn't solve the issues the roster has on defense. Chatfield isn't good enough and Coghlan for some reason is in the doghouse. The solution is someone like Luke Schenn, Kulikov, etc someone like that. Horvat would be a luxury but not at the price Vancouver will want. Replace Noesen with Jarvis on the powerplay and run Jarvis Svechnikov - Aho - Necas Burns on the top unit and run Noesen second unit with Pacioretty, Teravainen, and whatever other pure weapons you want. There's not a real need for a Horvat. Right now, the Canes need a 3LW, a 3RD, and maybe a 3LD if there is cap space left over. A 2C doesn't do a whole lot for this roster.

What would you realistically offer for Schenn?

What would you want...? With all due respect, everyone else the Canes may have been after from Vancouver started with Morrow so PTSD is kind of... hampering my judgment to put it nicely. Using the Braun trade last year as a comparable could do the 3rd this year. Whichever one doesn't go to SJS for Burns. I'd be content with that.

I think some canucks fans do have pretty inflated values for our players. The only trades I shoot down are ones where the value doesn't make sense in the moment. For instance a lot of the JT Miller to NY trades, which I really disliked because I really don't think Schneider or Lundkvist are that good. I'm guessing many morrow trades involve Horvat or Boeser. I know some Canes fans also view Morrows upside a bit higher than those who arent up to speed with the organization. But this player may be a continuous target because Canes fans don't often make a realistic counter. We don't know what is available.

If I'm looking at the past market I see that Schenn plays a similar game to Chiarot and Savard - two guys who were serious overpays and are very overrated. But Schenn is also quite a bit older and plays with an elite D partner. I think interest will be there since he is a budget version of a rare and desirable player type.
If I was GM i'd be asking a contender's 2nd but allow some flexibility and set my low bar at a 3rd. As mentioned, I expect teams to be interested which should make that 2nd a little more reasonable, but I'd be content with a 3rd.

I think if the ask is a 2nd, teams will look elsewhere. There are guys like Kulikov that are just as experienced and will not cost that much. Schenn has the nice cap hit, but with the inflated space at the deadline and teams willing to retain. I like what Schenn does but I'd be a little unhappy about a 2nd. Very few 3rd pair D men are worth that.
