Offer sheet compensation is valued at the total value of the contract divided by 5.
    So 9,000,000 x 8 = 71,000,000.
    71,000,000 / 5 = 14,200,000.
So the amount that goes towards the compensation evaluation is $14.2 million which would warrant 4 1st round picks.

I know this is confusing, and an often forgotten about rule, but it is the reason why only like 4 offer sheets have ever been successful.

Excerpt explaining it: For example, a seven year contract with a cap hit of $7 million would have an offer sheet value of $9.8 million ($49m total value divided by 5) - worth four first round picks instead of a first, second and third like a five year, $7m per year contract would be./em>

they would have to give up 4 1st round picks (have to be theirs only...cannot be CHI, for example) as compensation because of the Offer Sheet Value Restrictions

Thanks, Cameron. This is helpful. I had only remembered it a few night ago, but it's a pretty hefty chiller on anyone getting too fresh with other teams' stars.

For the last time it's like free agency, You can only offer sheet Draisaitl up to 7 years and fat chance that Chia wouldn't match that. You would need to offer at least $11 million before it would effect his cap structure.
