Description
This is LA's approximate cap situation for next season if they hold onto Petersen and sign another $2M goaltender.
Assuming RFA's accept qualifying offers aside from Vilardi who will likely be $3M-ish (or more) with arbitration rights. (Some qualifying offers will be 5-10% higher than shown here as well.)
Assuming a $2M goaltender addition instead of playing Petersen next season.

Debate was whether LA can afford to keep Petersen buried and buy him out the following season.
Technically possible, but would be restrictive even assuming no substantial RFA raises outside of Vilardi and minimal investment in a second goaltender.

Petersen also has a 10 team no-trade list, making moving him more difficult.
Would it take a 1st to convince a team to take him and buy him out immediately, so Petersen will allow the trade and become a free agent for next season to sign elsewhere?
Or is LA better off giving him another chance and saving on signing another goaltender? (Knowing that moving him in-season will be more difficult.)

Additional Details:
This can be any team willing to pay to buy out Petersen, assuming that team is on his NTC list.
$7.6M total with just over $5M of that applying to next season.
Last two seasons are $1.16M in the 3rd and 4th years of the buyout.

Alternatively, it can be a team not on his NTC list so an immediate buyout is not required. Perhaps a team will take less or the pick can be conditional, if they are going to use him. I just don't see it as likely.

Not the focus of the post. You can swap any players under $1M around (that's about all the $300k cushion is good for).
I only brought up Clark to show the salary picture with a full complement of players.

Edited Feb. 27, 2023 at 3:18 p.m.. Reason: corrected error
Petersen buyout in June, 2024:

2024-2025: $1 million
2025-2026: $2 million

Only a moron would incur an additional $4.6 million in cap to do that one year earlier, or spend our 2023 first-round draft pick to move him.

That's the question. Can you survive long enough to do that?
Like I said, it's possible, just doesn't leave much wiggle room.

Thank you for posting this. I should have made it clear that I really appreciate your publishing this illustration, because I'm completely on your side. (Note that I corrected the error in my earlier post, which you quoted.)

You imply, quite correctly, that there are three ways to address this issue:

1. Buy Petersen out this summer. Wrong for the reasons we both cite -- raises his cap hit from $3.85 million to $5,166,667 (making the problems of addressing the LhD and G weaknesses worse) and incurs additional negative costs.

2. Buy Petersen out in June 2024. As you point out, limits us to $2 million to acquire goalie help, but that can be alleviated by other roster adjustment(s), for example, trading Sean Walker.

3. Spend a first-round draft pick to dump him. A very unpalatable idea in view of the need for stockpiling prospects at LhD and G {cough Caden Price cough} and the fact that we had no 2022 first.
