Here is how I view this trade.

Pesce and Nylander both on expiring deals.

Liljgren and Necas both on cheap expiring deals and shouldn't be too hard to re-sign.

Carolina adds scoring up front in Nylander, Leafs add a much needed shut down defender to play with Rielly.

Both teams get young cheap players to replace what they lose.

Seems like a win win trade.

Canes pass. Lilj doesn’t do much to replace the defense of Pesce and we aren’t likely to give Nylander close to 9-10 million without ever playing here first

Actually based off of both.
Canes need a goal scorer like Nylander and trading for Liljegren negates what you would lose with Pesce.

Nylander will come in at 9, or at least that is what his ask is. He will probably get that with Meier getting 8.8.

Liljgren is a solid young defenceman, and the whole point of this trade is that Nylander > Necas, but Pesce is > Liljgren. However, the two players that are worse (Necas and Liljgren), are younger and will be easier to re-sign. This trade works for both teams if you actually think about it. If Liljgren was just as good as Pesce, then the Leafs would never offer this deal. Its called a hockey trade. Sometimes you need to trade your strengths to address your weaknesses.
