Description
I went to buy out Matt Murray and I noticed that Ottawa was on the hook for 25% of the buy out matching their 25% retention exactly.

2023/24 Leafs cap hit $687,500 (75%) Sens cap hit $229,167 (25%)
2024/25 Leafs cap hit $2,000,000 Sens cap hit $666,667

So...it looks like if a team trade trades for Matt Murray and the Leafs retain 50% then the buy out amount would be split between the Leafs and the other team.

2023/24 Leafs cap hit $343,750 (37.5%) 3rd team's cap hit $343,750 (37.5%) Sens cap hit $229,167 (25%)
2024/25 Leafs cap hit $1,000,000(37.5%) 3rd team's cap hit $1,000,000 (37.5%) Sens cap hit $666,667

Is this correct? (I randomly chose Winnipeg simply because they had over $9 MIL in cap space but it could be any team with $343,750 in cap space.

only team that can buyout Murray now is the Leafs and only if one of their players file for arbitration.
So say Sammy files for arbitration that would open a 48hr window after they settle for a buyout.
The player must have been on the team at the last season tdl for him to be eligible for the buyout l

Edmonton trading Yamamoto to Detroit who promptly bought him out is different somehow? Looking at Winnipeg as an example again... the have 4 players who are artbitration eligible and let's say one of the 4 gets a large settlment... are you saying then that Winnipeg would not be able to buy Murray out? Just trying to wrap my head around it,

The Yamamoto buyout happened in the 1st buyout window which is a general buyout window. I think it starts 48 hrs after the Cup is awarded until 5 pm the day before free agency.

The second buyout window is related to arbitration with the details that Armer mentioned.
