Description
Same as "Best of," below, but without RNH. Hat tip to TimmyV and PhillyJabroni for suggesting doing the other two trades, and re-signing Carlson. I made this simulation to ask more detailed questions about the value of each deal, and to check how much cap space the Caps end up with to try to extend Carlson. It looks like playing Marchesault instead of Eller, and McNabb instead of Orpik gives the Caps enough cap space to extend Carlson at 7M/yr. Assuming a seven year offer, do you think he signs?
Trades
1.
WSH
  1. Marchessault, Jonathan
  2. McNabb, Brayden
  3. Miller, Colin
Additional Details:
Vegas fans got excited about a similar deal with the Caps throwng in a 1st (and Vegas sending Engelland and Karlsson instead of Marchesault, and more AHLers, but no Eller). Caps fans said they'd make this deal with a 3rd pick... Let's try a mid-2nd, and a 5th, and see what the peanut gallery comes up with.
VGK
  1. Carlson, Adam
  2. Eller, Lars
  3. McGauley, Tim
  4. Orpik, Brooks
  5. Williams, Colby
  6. 2018 2nd round pick (FLA)
  7. 2019 5th round pick (WSH)
2.
WSH
  1. Larkin, Dylan
  2. Nyquist, Gustav
Additional Details:
Detroit might find another way out of their salary cap troubles. People get injured and traded all the time, though, so maybe they still value their talented young wingers highy. Would you take this deal if it cost a first pick and Jacub Vrana?
DET
  1. Vrána, Jakub
  2. 2018 1st round pick (WSH)
  3. 2020 6th round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
I tried building this trade around Burakovsky, but I looked up Detroit's cap situation, and it's worse than I thought. CF lists them with -3.9M cap space. This deal clears 3.2M, and then they can demote Vrana to the AHL, to get the rest of the way. Giving up on Vrana is a tough pill to swallow, but keeping Burakovsky and adding two more established wingers is pretty neat. The Vegas trade left the Caps' cap ht all the way down at 65M. This brings it back up to around 69M, with as much offense from their forwards as they had last year, and a little more speed.

Yeah no thanks not dealing Larkin and Nyquist for Vrana whom has 6 points in 21 games plus a late 2018 1st round pick and a 2020 6th round pick. If the Caps win the cup the 1st rounder is a #31 pick no thanks both Nyquist and Larkin are worth far more then that and Vrana hasn't proven a thing heard that he might even be on the block you want Larkin and Nyquist then we had better get Carlson at 6x6 at the very least.

Well Nyquist is one of the most overrated players in the league. The only thing he's good at is slashing guys in the head. Plus he's overpaid as hell. Larkin was trash last year so it's not like he's some prodigy. He's a second line player at best, period.

Over-rated? Who knows... but he's not the most overpaid. On a team with Zetterberg, Nielsen, Kronwal, DeKeyser, Green, Helm, Howard and Mrazek, he's not in the top eight guys I would ask to trade for, but then started looking at contracts, and these are the guys who could fit on the Caps, if the Caps were able to cut a lot of salary of their own, first.

Vrana is on pace to be a decent goal scorer in the NHL: https://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2016/12/01/every-goal-jakub-vrana-has-scored-in-the-ahl-this-season-for-the-hershey-bears-gifs/
Detroit has the highest salary cap number in the NHL and finished third-to-last in the East: https://www.google.com/search?q=nhl+standings+2017&oq=nhl+standings+2017&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.4779j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

So, while the salary cap is causing Washington to shed a few veterans it wants to keep (16M in departed contracts this summer, and counting), it is forcing Detroit to nuke their roster from orbit and start over. It's not a question of whom the Red Wings are willing to trade, whle stayng competitive. They are not competitive. It's who fits where, and what is a fair return. That said, thank you for joining the conversation, and we'd love to hear more about the players available in this smoldering firesale.

Also, CF seems to have this mutual delusion that Carlson will sign for the same amount of money as Mike Green or Kevin Shattenkirk. But Carlson has played on a team with both of those guys, and there's a reason neither of them stuck around.

Aw, man. Krakowitz, we might be taking the wrong angle, here. This guy's username is "Larkin is King." How did I miss that before? He wants Larkin to stay in Detroit. And if Detroit is able to retain salary on trading some of its more problematic contracts, he might get his wish. Hmmm...

Carlson, this year, at half of his eventual 8M contract, might be a fair trade for Abdelkader, Zetterberg, and Green, each at half of theirs? Maybe Washington throws in a 2nd and a 5th,just out of sympathy?
