Description
... for Edmonton, at least. Leafs fans insist on sending Brodie to Edmonton in multiple posts each day, completely ignorant of the fact Edmonton has no cap space due to pending contracts for Ryan McLeod and Evan Bouchard which are projected to eat every last dollar of available cap space. So the only way for Edmonton to take Brodie (and fulfill Leafs fans wildest dreams 😋) is to make the deal cap neutral for the Oilers. One way to do that is to have a third party retain 50% and receive a decent player in return. In effect:

Edmonton: 2nd + Kulak for Brodie
Chicago: $2.5M x 1 retention for Kulak
Toronto: Brodie for 2nd

This way Toronto gets 100% cap relief and an asset, Edmonton remains cap compliant and gets an upgrade for a 2nd, Chicago gets a big, fast LHD who can help shelter all those young defensemen in their transition to the NHL.

Chicago could counter by offering future considerations for kulak. That could be a positive for both clubs or stepping stone towards Brodie at 50% but will cost Edmonton more to fully pull this off in my opinion. Brodie is an intriguing name im 50/50 if worth pursuing.

So Kulak has no value to you? IMO he's worth a 2nd round pick.

Absolutely think he’s got value but I don’t think GMs such as holland at this time will extract that value. Would Chicago value kulak high enough to spend 5+ million on this upcoming year? Just think with the again limited cap growth this off-season it leaves guys like kulak who by all rights should carry decent value as toss ins or add ons in trades. He’s a good player but a tough sell at this time for this type of move. Don’t think this idea is bad just timing of it doesn’t fit current landscape of the league. If Chicago is willing to invest that type of money they could shop around and get possibly a better player from a team stresses over cap space. Not going to complain about the situation holland is in has done an amazing job over the past few years but he’s caught in a position of weakness to negotiate this one.

From Chicago's standpoint, paying Kulak $5.25M + $2.75M + $2.75M is better value than paying Athanasiou $4.25M + $4.25M. I think there's enough value there for the Blackhawks to consider this. Especially seeing LHD is an area of extreme weakness for them right now.
