Description

Ultimately, signing WIlly to a long term deal doesn't make as much sense going forward as trading him to revamp the D-core. There are some potentially good D prospects in the system but not much proven NHL talent, or at least little enough to make me nervous.
That said, the $10M doesn't handicap the Leafs as much as you might expect but it is still the wrong move in my opinion.

Just front load the deal and let Willy pretend he's making 10 mil a year when his AAV will be 9.

Why are fans worried about Nylander. Leafs have seven upcoming UFAs, and Nylander is just one.
What will happen to Nylander? M NTC Nylander remains a Leaf all season as the Leafs try for a long Cup run. Nylander and his contract and signs elsewhere next summer. Leafs spend the cap that had allotted for Nylander on other player(s). It's really not complicated. Happens to every team every year.
Or maybe, Nylander signs with the Leafs, but once a player reaches UFA status, the chances of his current team signing him is 3.5%
