Oh totally. A team projected to be in the bottom 5 should absolutely shed futures for an expiring UFA 3rd liner (not even a position of need).

A projected bottom-5 team is exactly who should spend a mid round pick on a pending UFA. They'll be able to trade him at the deadline for much more than a 3rd.

But it's a moot point. Edmonton isn't going to trade him for a 3rd anyhow. He scores at 1st line rates at 5v5 from the 3rd line, and is top 10 in the NHL for takeaways/60 and iHDCF/60. He's big, fast and physical - exactly what they want in their bottom-6.

Please describe how much more than a third Warren Foegele is going to return at TDL. I think we can both agree a 1st is insane, so the best they’re hoping for is a 2nd from a playoff contender. That’s what, 1-15 picks ahead of a SJ 3rd at best? Not considering if Foegele gets hurt or underperforms on a bad team like ANA. The return could disappear completely?

You could’ve been spot on if you’d wanted to reply in that original message saying ‘Foegele is absolutely worth a 3rd, though there’s probably a better fit than ANA’.
