Description
I think the team is definitely better than last year, but the east and the metro is also better. I think that could leave us with a similar record as last year even though we are a better team. The top 6 is insane, they single handedly win us games (along with top 4 D), but we don't have depth scoring or players in the bottom 6 that make impacts in other ways (although I've liked Eller's game so far). We will beat a bunch of bad teams, the stars will carry us. But when we play the top metro teams or fast teams we will struggle. I think we lack sandpaper in the lineup and it is frustrating because that has been a problem for years. I'm not saying that needs to be our identity or even close to it, but we need players that can change momentum, draw penalties, and protect our net/screen goalies. I also think we need to just 100% commit to team defense, we did for a stretch of games, but it seems like the structure we played with just wasn't there the last two. The power play is also a mess, which it can't be with how many stars it has. There's not nearly enough movement and creativity. Overall I think this is a fringe playoff team, but just not seeing it as a contender right now. That could change of course with a few trades plus coaching adjustments.

I'd make small trades like this and see what happens. Wouldn't give up a 1st or 2nd until this team shows improvement.

This is what I expected the team to be. The top 5 have been great (Rakell has been a major disappointment) Tanger and EK65 have been what we expected them to be and Eller has been my most pleasant surprise thus far. The 4th line and the bottom pairing are weak but that’s not a major problem unless you’re a real contender, which we aren’t. I’m happy enough with Jarry because although I’m not ever going to lead his fan club he could be worse. I’m HIGHLY disappointed with the Graves signing and I’m really worried we got hoodwinked .

I can assure you more grit will not do anything. Adding inferior players will in fact, make the team worse.

I agree with all that. I guess it begs the question though of what we do at the trade deadline if we are out of playoffs. Even if we're borderline, I don't think I'm trading a 1st unless we're almost a lock. Another year of missing the playoffs I think it's time to consider a rebuild. I think there's a good chance Dubas would do it too.

It will make a big different for getting net front presence and protecting our net. Jarry is constantly screened, we leave people open in front of the net. Need someone to help with that and also could use a Hornqvist/Kunitz/Tanev type. I wouldn't say Max Jones and Hakanpaa are worse than what we currently have on 4th line/3rd pair.

Is that all Jones is worth? Probably, might be an overpay based on who you ask. I think he still has power forward middle 6 upside that's he's finally starting to unlock now that he's 25. I'm also not particularly interested in shipping out any youth.

If you want Carrick we can send him over instead.
