Care to elaborate? Bean is more NHL-Ready than Fleury is, Stemp gives them a forward/helps with the cap difference/can be traded at the deadline for something else, and the 1st is a 1st.
First, I like Bean, but he's a 19-year-old undersized defenseman who is miles from the NHL; realistically he needs 2-3 more years of development before being an effective NHL option, and that isn't a certainty at this point.*
Second, Stempniak is an undersized, aging, streaky winger - the kind that can be signed for around $1M in UFA season**. You state that he "helps with the cap difference" - in other words, a cap dump. Carolina isn't anywhere near the cap limit, so why is this necessary to swing the deal?
Thirdly, that first pick is 21 months away and not going to help the Avalanche franchise for maybe 4-5 years, if at all.*
* There were 10 D-men taken in the first 31 picks of the 2013 draft, and 4 years later just 4 of them have played 100+ games in the NHL. Of the 4, just one was taken after the 8th pick: Zadorov. Carolina is getting better, so there's a very good chance that their 2019 1st round pick is in the 15+ range and may never make the NHL as a regular.
