Description
Not saying the Avs screwed up or anything, but I just keep thinking about an alternate route they could have gone...

What if, instead of the Mittelstadt acquisition, the Avs pulled the trigger on the rumored Byram for Gauthier trade and then gave up their 2024 1st for Henrique? They would be down another first but have one of the league's best prospects in the pool. Gauthier and Ritchie could be a lethal combo for a long time.

I acknowledge that Henrique is more of a short term fix than Mitts, but let's assume they extend him for 1-2 years at a reasonable price. Also, I assume the 1st is sufficient for Henrique with no retention. If I need to throw in a 4th or whatever to match what Edmonton gave up then fine.

Are the Avs better off here? The most relevant players in the prospect pool is in the taxi squad section for illustration.

Seriously? It's like Mitts and a late 1st for Henrique and arguably the best prospect in the league. I get there is an argument against it, but a ha ha ha no is crazy.

Yeah just thought I'd brighten your day 😏.

In all seriousness though, I like us on reality better than this. We still have 2 of the next 3 years firsts, a 2C we can actually extend, AND we still have one of the league's top center prospects in Cal Ritchie

I think we're better off with Mitts, though I'm taking the optimistic view that we'll be able to extend him. It sounds like Cmac definitely sees Mitts as a longer-term guy. I don't know why, but I was always nervous about the Avs and Henrique. I don't see him putting any team over the top this year and I wasn't thrilled to think about keeping him around longer. Probably totally wrong and he'll be lifting the cup as an Oiler.
