Description
Feel that staying the course really is the best course of action. The Ducks are VERY young, but the talent is defintely there.

Opted to make 2 FA signings that I think make sense.

1. Wennberg: a solid 3C that offensively is an upgrade on Lundestörm (who I see as a great 4C given where he has rounded out). A very good defensive player..... underrated. Some may suggest using McTavish, Carlsson and Zegras down the middle, which maybe valid - but in moving Zegras to the wing, the top 6 is very solid, and gives the Ducks a bit of centre depth to boot. Didn't want to give anyone significant term at 3C. Wennberg at $4.5 million is perhaps a little pricey, but this term falls off the books as the Ducks should be entering their window.

2. Miller: the Ducks blueline is sooooo young. Felt it necessary to pair the kids with a vet defender. Could I do better than Miller? Probably, but I also do not want to block Luneau's path to the NHL (I feel strongly a year in San Diego is not going to hurt him).
Miller definitelyis overpriced here but more thinking of making sure you land the guy. Further, a contract more then movable at the TDL if the Ducks retain 50%. Retaining for a season isn't the worst thing.

Notes:

1. Was apprehensive about having Zellweger on the roster- more about just how young this blueline is. But, his work at the NHL level suggests he is ready. San Diego is going to do nothing for him. I say the same thing for LaCombe. Ideally, sending one of them down to have a more experienced blueline would be my direction.... but the kids have earned their spot, and then some. If you are not expected to win yet, let them cut their teeth.

2. Gibson..... moving him would be soemthing I want to do, but, I simply don't believe now is the time. Be selling far too low, and retaining for 3 years is just not an option. Hope is as the Ducks improve, Gibson gets back to a form and Dostal continues to improve. The time is coming. This isn't it.

3. The Ducks could do better than Wennberg and Miller to fill the holes (thinking Ross Colton here lol), but this is not the time to be moving draft capital or assets. Many to the kids here are graduating, and the cupboard needs a restock. Keep it simple, and fill out without using assets.

Overall outlook: miss the playoffs, but if healthy should be a year to great growth and improvement.

I don't think Zell is ready for NHL duty yet, his defensive game just isn't there, he's been getting chewed up and spat out the last two weeks. Give him a year or two in SD.

Same for Luneau, coming off a lost season due to knee infection, let him cut his pro teeth down in SD and play alongside Hinds for a season or two.

However, I'd go after one of the top 4 RDs available, Mintyukov's development into a true #1 is critical for this team, let's give that the best possible chance with Pesche.

I'd also keep Lindstrom around, his microstats have been good for a 6/7 guy, he seems to fit the system, and he's the right age.

As to 3C, I really think it's about putting a shooter with Lundewtrom, he's a play making and play extending forward who's been good in the dot, in the limited time together, I liked him and Vatrano on the same line. With Verbeek wanting to shore up the bottom 6, I could see the improvements being made by pushing from the top down.

Well, I did say I was apprehensive about having Zellweger on the roster. He is showing well all things considered (imo), so it does create a conundrum. I 100% see the point of a year at least in San Diego. It won't hurt ine bit.

To the point of going after one of the "top tier" RD on the market - the temptation is there. The Ducks have the money. I was trepidations about it for two reasons: 1. I have to think the Pesce's of the world will be hoping to sign with a contender (which the Ducks are not right now), and 2. Long-term, it stands to reason that the hope is Luneau amd Warren are in the top 4. Maybe trying to land on of those guys bridges that gap. Same time, I wanna leave that door as open as possible.

Again, I see the point there.

Lastly, I am one to say I do not see Lundestörm as a 3C. Fabulous 4C. But him as a 3C I don't think cuts it when stacking up against other teams. The defensive game is there. 100%. But I see him more as a Kämpf type - where he "can" play 3C, but much better suited for 4C. (My Leafs fan-age coming out there). Wennberg is more a stop gap if you will, waiting to see how that core of McT, Zegras, Gauthier, Carlsson pan out. Could very well be one of those 4 end up suited for 3C (I doubt it, but play along).

I look at the Ducks, at they are at a point where they do need to be competitive. Not playoffs, but competitive. With Wennberg, I see a pretty solid top 9 that can produce, and a rather nasty checking unit with some offensive pop to it (for a 4th line).

See the path of least resistance to being more competitive is rounding out the forward core over spending on the back end and with term. Too much shaking out there yet..... but there is an aweful lot.to like about it.

Your thoughts are solid. Certainly a direction to go.

What is clear from what you are saying and from what I see from a far is this really is a critical offseasonnfor the Ducks. The decisions have bigger implications than they have for the last couple years.

I will add that I forgot to mention, I'd offer Pesche a 5-6 year deal and chuck money at him to make it work. Signing past 5 gives me hesitation. Beautiful part of where the Ducks are currently is in 3 years if Warren is popping off in SD and ready to take over, we can eat some of Pesce's salary and trade him to a contender where he can be an effective bottom 4 RHD.

Well, Pesce won't sign for less, that is for certain.

I guess the question is in 3 years time if the Ducks are in a position to eat some of that salary? Time will tell; but the plan is solid

Very few GMs hand out long term deals that end in a players late 30s, only two I knew of no longer GM in the league (Hextall and Wilson) Pesce will be 30 as near as makes no difference at the start of next season, and while he'll play better longer than a typical defenseman might, age will catch up to an 8 year contract.

He might find one at a reduced AAV with a competitor who doesn't expect him to see the tail end of that deal, but that's where I think Anaheim has an advantage, we can boost the AAV to compensate and have a similar total contract earnings.
