Description
Montreal Trade

Montreal Acquires:
-Nikita Zaitsev
-James van Riemsdyk
-Tyler Bozak
-Andrew Nielsen
-2018 2nd round pick

Toronto Acquires:
-Jeff Petry
-Alex Galchenyuk

Reasons why Montreal does this:
Montreal acquires a defensemen who is better known for his offensive or puck moving abilities in place of the more defensive minded Petry. They also acquire 2 top 9 forwards in Bozak and JVR, who although on expiring contracts can be resigned for reasonable prices (JVR 6x6, Bozak 2x3.5/4). As well they get an alright prospect and a 2nd round pick.

Reasons why Toronto does this:
They upgrade their top 4 with a more defensively sound right handed defensemen to play with Gardiner. They also acquire another young player who is capable of playing centre and scoring some goals.

Washington Trade

Washington Acquires:
-Eric Fehr
-Nikita Soshnikov
-2018 3rd round pick

Toronto Acquires:
-Lars Eller (50% retained)

Washington does this if they’re looking on the outside of the playoff bubble and need to get a return for an asset that is sure to be leaving. While Fehr is a cap dump, Soshnikov I could see really succeeding on the Caps, he’s an electric quick and aggressive winger who could be an effective bottom 6 player. Washington also gets a pick.

Toronto does this if they’re really in a position to make a play at the deadline and Moore isn’t doing great. Eller is fantastic in that he’s much more defensively responsible and he can put up good possession. If injuries happen down the middle the Leafs are set with an abundance of options.

Montreal trade makes zero sense from Leafs standpoint.
