Why would they trade Theodore though? Hanifin just essentially replaces Pietrangelo in terms of skill set. Would be a big mistake for the Leafs to make that trade.

If you look at Vegas roster next season, they have forward production that will be walking out the door in Marchessault and Stephenson. Would be smart to leverage their depth at d to replace that with marner. Marner fits their window better than paying 30+ year old players. They can run Martinez-pietro hanifin-mcnabb hague-whitecloud without missing a beat, and add a play maker for eichel. Think it works out really well for both teams.

If they had the opportunity to get Marner for Theodore+ a 2nd they would do it but that's just not realistic. I'm just pointing out from a roster construction point of view that they would be better off keeping Theodore.

Martinez is old, even older than Marchessault, it would make more sense to let him walk than trade Theodore who is 8 years younger. Upfront, they already added Hertl who is 30, which will cost them Stephenson and Marchessault, but they pretty much made their bed with that one but at least he's 6 years younger than Martinez.
