A Leafs future if they believed ESPN's idea that trading Matthews could deliver far better WAR per $.
Toronto gets more expected wins from not using massive amounts of their salary cap on forwards. Arizona would then build around Matthews, while the Leafs instantly become a more complete team. Matthews would bring a haul, especially if packaged with players more useful to AZ than T.O. ESPN don't value Matthews' rareness nearly highly enough, nor his intrinsic value to AZ...
By the way the Leafs add only Panarin, and use the rest of the money to keep sign their own. This Leafs team could win the cup.

Toronto has been waiting for a player like Matthews for years. Why would they trade him? It might have made sense to trade the draft pick to Arizona on draft day as that might have paid a King's ransom, but no way now!
