Description
I don't think Toronto is looking to get rid of Phaneuf but the pens took kessel so why not take Dion too. Even if the leafs decide they want to move Phaneuf and get him to waive his NMC & NTC i dont know what kind of return they'd be looking for so i just through in some prospects and a pick. If he went to Pit like phil they would have to eat some salary, cause i dont think any team wants are declining 30 yo who's signed at 7m for the next 6 years. Still don't think the leafs are trading their captain though. But he would help the pens defense for the time being. This is solely based on the fact that I just watched a Phaneuf hits video and I wouldn't be happy with JR if he did this even if it did mean getting rid of Ian Cole.

Phanuef has played well this season. But you are correct, when and it might be shortly that his play will decline. Publicly the Leafs are saying that don't intend to trade him. (what else can they say?). Given the right deal he would be traded. Right deal meaning money freedom.
After this season, if the Leafs were to buy one Phanuef it would cost about 2.5m for 10 years. So I would think that a reasonable trade would be for the Leafs would retain no more in salary (or crappy contracts in return)
than 2.5m for 5 years.
Phanuef and Kessell cute together? That's a first.
