Description
Transition year. A few moves and then stick with what we have. Target Tavares or plan B Stastny only. I don't expect either, but take them if we can get them. If we don't get either, wait until next season and go after Couture, Seguin, Pavelski, Duchene, etc. More options available then, and we'll have better evaluations of our players with lower expectations.
11 picks to stock the cupboards this year, as we may need to spend picks in the next couple of years to build up to where we want to be.

Gives us a shortened window of contention by being patient, with current standouts, but our younger core will still be young enough when reinforcements arrive, and hopefully fully established in roles they will succeed at. Hopefully keeping the window open for a number of years.

Move players around in the lines as needed and see who fits best and where. C is still a big question mark for this year.
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Larsson, Jacob
  2. 2018 1st round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
Unsigned C prospect Antoine Morand (#59 overall in 2017)
ANA
  1. Pacioretty, Max
Additional Details:
Potential future D partner for Juulsen and an offensive, playmaking center prospect to compliment our current C prospects who are more of the two-way variety.
2.
MTL
  1. Bennett, Sam
  2. 2018 4th round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
Bennett seems to have topped out as a 3rd liner in Calgary, and is stuck behind others on the depth chart at the center position, so he ends up on the wing.
They recoup a 2nd round pick and receive a comparable forward replacement.
CGY
  1. Hudon, Charles
  2. 2018 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Montreal taking a chance that Bennett can be at least a 2nd line C in a fresh start with new possibilities.
3.
MTL
  1. Armia, Joel
Additional Details:
Wing depth in exchange for C depth for the playoffs.
WPG
  1. Plekanec, Tomas ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Winnipeg fans don't seem too high on Armia from what I have seen, but he has some late development potential.
4.
MTL
  1. 2019 5th round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Cheap depth winger for playoffs.
Can be another team, I just targeted our own 2019 5th.
5.
MTL
  1. 2018 6th round pick (WPG)
  2. 2018 7th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Again, can be any teams. (Not all to the same team)
Depth playoff rentals.
Try to recover 6th and 7th round picks this year.

Morand's junior numbers are just 'meh' if you're looking for a pure "OFFENSIVE" centre.

There's no way WPG gives you Armia for Pleky.

Morand is unimpressive. If he is the young center that comes out of a Pacioretty trade, we're gonna be screwed for a while.

Froese, yes.
Niemi, maybe. He's been good in Montreal.
Hemsky, not right now at least. He'd have to come back and have a couple decent games first.

I did say "try", even if the picks are conditional. It's not like they are high stakes or expensive.

I dunno. Like I said, the impression I get from Jets fans is that he isn't valued too highly. If Plekanec retained is worth a 2nd, and Armia is close to that for value, it might be a consideration. If not, we can consider other options.

Morand's junior numbers are decent for an 18 year old. Steel was under a point per game in his first two seasons. Morand is over a point per game. Larsson is a bigger piece. The Ducks have a ridiculous record for drafting and developing quality defensemen, so I'm betting on that while taking a risk on the center return.
