Description
This trade is partly about $ saved by CAR.

CAR saves $1.18M in salary with the Kruger trade. If they were planning to buy him out after this season then this still saves them $418k
CAR saves $6.15M in salary with the Darling trade. If they were planning to buy him out after this season then this still saves them $2.2M
Trading the Kruger, Darling contracts save CAR a minimum of $2.62M and a max $7.33M in actual salary for players they likely don't want.

CAR is a budget team not a cap team so this makes sense for them.

They also get Murphy, a late 1st in a deep draft, 23yo Kampf (4C), Berube (backup), and a 3rd round pick.

CAR has a ton of good young defenseman so trading Faulk isn't super devastating to their roster. They would still have:
Slavin - Pesce
Hanifin - Murphy
Fluery - TVR
Jake Bean is also in the system. If these young players continue to progress they likely won't need to resign Faulk to a huge contract once his deal is up in two years anyways.

For Chicago, we know what Darling can provide as a backup to Crawford. Jimmy Waite can also help him get back to form. With his known history he will likely play better being close to his family and in his hometown. Forsberg can continue to progress as the full time starter for Rockford and grow under Peter Aubry's instruction.

We know what Kruger brings. He is one of the best shutdown centers in the league. He doesn't bring much offense but the Blackhawks desperately need to improve their defensive zone coverage and he help tremendously.

The Hawks have young D in the system with Jokiharju, Mitchell, Krys and possibly even one drafted high this year. But they need a top 4 defenseman now while the prospects develop. Faulk fills that for 2 years until one or 2 of them is ready to take a top 4 role. They also have to option to resign Faulk if needed as well.

The Hawks still have significant cap space to sign a middle 6 forward or another defenseman. This team looks much better.

I can't see Carolina retaining that much for nothing special in return.

They save money by doing so. As stated in the description.
CAR is also not a cap team so cap hit is irrelevant to them.

Yes, but Faulk is a top pairing Dman, those don't get traded for poor returns because their a cap team.

Just because Carolina has a lot of defensemen doesn't mean they'll be looking to get rid of one of them. Removing Darling/Berube and Kampf/Kruger, this deal looks like Murphy+late1st+late3rd for Faulk. I'm not sure they'd care for that? Murphy would be a downgrade for sure.

I also don't think they'd be that interested in Berube.

The point of the trade is to allow CAR to save money and find a real starting goaltender. They can't exactly do that with a goalie signed for over $4M when they are a budget team. Maybe they don't retain as much on the Darling part of the trade.
Kruger is empty salary to them. They won't want to keep his contract.
Kampf/Berube were not meant to be direct replacements for Kruger/Darling. Berube would be a cheap 26 year old backup. Kampf is a 22 year old rookie who can play center or continue to develop in the AHL if needed.
I guess this trade depends on how much CAR values saving money on players they likely don't want.
There's no arguing that Murphy would be a downgrade, but its not like Murphy doesn't have value. He was a 2nd pairing guy in Arizona before he came to Chicago. He has the capability to be a solid 2nd pairing guy in a different system. I would have added Duclair, Hinostroza, or Hayden instead of Kampf but I think its pretty obvious that CAR needs centers.

1st pairing guy for 2nd pairing guy, 1st round pick, 3rd round pick, rookie center, backup goalie, and the opportunity to find a true starter. Pesce is already a 1st pairing RHD also. That is how I originally thought of it.
