Yea, you do that if you want to be in cap hell...

You sign Tavares and the Leafs will lose one of Marner or Nylander..

If the leafs are going to sign Tavares then the smart thing to do would be to use Nylander to get a young top 4 stud.... Nylander for OEL straight up would be an excellent trade.

You don't want a full roster, you don't want to. pay the Performance Bonuses from last year, you don't want to pay the PB of 2018/19 in 2019? It's really not cap compliant

BTW, Nylander is nothing special. OEL for Nylander straight up would be more than fair...... And yes it would be fantastic deal for the Leafs, the Leafs need a defensenan..
