The Caps can't afford to trade their first round pick and not get back a young center. Backstrom's contract is up in two years and they have nobody in the system remotely close.
Nyquist adds enough on the wing to shrug off taking on his salary, but the Caps traded their first round pick last year, went off board in taking a Russian goalie before that, and right now their non-NHL center depth chart is mostly guys projected to play in bottom six roles, except for Garret Pilon and Beck Malenstyn, who are talented, but aren't necessarily projected to make it to the show at all.
Unless they go out and sign a Stastny or Tavares, or trade for Toews somehow.... that pick needs to fill an organizational need at center.
Grubauer is going to cost 3 to 4M. His GAA and spct are better than Holtby's. Carlson's comparables are around 7 to 8M. He's leading all defensemen in points, and actually playing some defense, too.
