I've read this proposal in a couple of blogs and think that it's terrible for MTL. Lucic is of no value to Habs who are already overloaded on LW and will most probably draft Zadina in a couple of weeks. Alzner had a mediocre first year with Habs, but as a D, has greater value to them, albeit it may have to be on the third pairing until his game picks up. At best, the value is the same, so why would MTL pick up an additional year of a bad contract?

In theory it sounds like it makes sense but I just can't see both teams doing it.

I think the real play here is for a team to make a pitch for Lucic and the 10OA.

With retention that does nothing for the Oilers, 4.625M+1.375M = 6M so we are still wasting 6M on a player we want less then Lucic (Look at EDM LD situation)
