Description
Keeping the core and hope Reirden or who ever is next coach can use some of the youngsters, especially Varna and Bura. Hate to see Beagle go and although DSP played well in the playoffs, I think there are younger more talented youngsters waiting and need to get game experience and development.

DSP was 7th in the playoffs in even strength goals, while only 47th in time on ice among skaters. https://www.hockey-reference.com/playoffs/NHL_2018_skaters.html

If you're replacing him with a better clutch goal scorer, that's fantastic, but there aren't any available, and calling up Johansen who hasn't put his offense together yet in the AHL to ride the bench is a waste of his time and of the team's cap space.

If Smith-Pelly is holding out for 2M+ after playing like 800k through the regular season, then, sure, he can walk because cap space, but until Johansen has a 50 point year in the AHL he's better served playing 24 minutes a night against bubble NHLers for 80 games in the A than playing 8 minutes a night against bubble NHLers for 30 games in the N. They can still call him up to practice with Carlson or Niskanen when there are injuries. I'm sure he has a bright future ahead of him. But unless there's an immediate top four spot you need to rush him into, why not see if he can match his production from juniors in a second or third year in the AHL? http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=169246

If you can add elsewhere, great. But giving Travis Boyd, a 23 year old who showed up in the playoffs and didn't do anything, a 200k raise to a price tag that I think 25 year old Smith-Pelly would be happy to sign at after having the most surprisingly great playoff by a Cap since Druce in '88? I don't get it.
