I would take Hedmen over Karlson if you are looking for better defense. I don't have a replacement goalie for Grubi, but how can you leave off Draisaittl?

Don't trade Dowd. He is one of the most consistent players on the team.

What are your thoughts Cap Fans on these lines
time to move on from Johansen. Either Fehervary or Alexeyev are much better choices. Also, might be time to let Travis Boyd move on also. I agree with the previous comment about swapping McMicheal and Kuzy, leaving Kuzy at center. Let McMicheal have some time adapting to the NHL and the increased role for a center.
Otherwise I like the lineup, possibly swapping Hagelin and Panik. 3rd line of Panik/Eller/Oshie would be a real good line and the 4th line would also be very good.
Sorry to see Holtby gone, but it will be the only way to make the cap work next year.

Not really getting how Puljuarvi gets top line minutes. He looks like he hasn't done much on the Oilers in his time there. We've got Dowd signed at center on the 4th line. Just from reports it seems that Leipsic has a motor on him and is probably greater than Boyd. 4th line should be Dowd C Hathaway & Leipsic wings. Hagalin on the 3rd

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CharlieFoxtrot</b></div><div>So you give up the last year of Holtby so you can sign Sam Bennett and bunch of 4th liners?</div></div>
Rittich is a decent goalie whose save percentage and goals against were slightly better than Holtby. Bennett is a decent 3rd liner who is more consistent in both ends than Bura. I don't mind this trade myself. Use Rittich and see if Samsanov can see some time in Washington this year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KVS1</b></div><div>Bura is not a project. He just needs a chance. He lit it up with McDavid in juniors as his LW, he will do the same in the bigs. His problem has been injuries and Troz doesn't play young players. He has been passed by Vrana and sits behind OV and they added Hagelin for D purposes. Never got PP time and most often on 4th line. He just needs minutes and a good center. He has great speed, good hands and has become more responsible. PP is the project. The Oil has fvcked him up and he may never reach his potential. Both need new teams.</div></div>
That was PP being the project. Bura at the end of this past season played the way he needs to play all year.

If Bura goes to Edmonton and gets on McDavid's line, I'm thinking he hits 20 maybe even 30 goals. Puljujärvi maybe needs a new start, but do we need a project for Bura?

My Ideal Offseason - Caps Fans Weigh in
I like your detailed well thought out analysis! Agree completely that Samsonov / and Lucas Johansen need time up with the Caps. I think it is looking like Johansen maybe a 1st round pick bust. If so move on. Stralman might not be available at 3years 3.7mil. He still is a decent defender. I don't know what to think about Burakovsky. I still think he has the potential to be a 25 goal a year guy. He showed flashes of it near the end of the year, then again revert back to his sub par ways. I really wouldn't want to see him go somewhere else and start to light it up; good for him if so but with little or no return for him it would mean 2 first round picks (Johansen) that we would be giving up on. However, signing him for 3.25M or more doesn't seem to make a lot of sense either.
Hate to see Connolly go too, but looking at the cap space left I agree GMBM may not be able to sign him.

December Roster
Agree with previous post that if Shumakov gets used to the smaller rinks and speed that's 4 real good lines. Where is DSP in all this? I do like the D pairings if Bowey can rise up. I think he got saddled with Orpik last year and couldn't get it going. The taste of the cup and not wanting to be sent back down should be all the incentive Bowey needs. Put Orpik in as a playing coach?

Opening Night
We need a 7th D man. I know they just sent Siegenthaler and Ness down. I might of kept Sieg up - not sure how to fit with the Cap space.
The 2 games with DSP playing - my eye test only - I didn't think he added much. This after being held out for so long too. Don't know the real story there.
I'd really like to see Mega or possibly Jaskin get a chance on the 4th line. DSP for the opening game only because of the playoff run.
They have been practicing with B. Connolly on the top line.

Wilson suspended for 6-10 games line-up
I think Gersich looked good during pre season also. I do think they will throw the book at Wilson. Dumb hit, even is Sundqvist was lower coming across the middle. Wilson is hurting the team with this up coming suspension. I think TW's salary counts against the cap even while suspended.

Capitals Shakeup
I don't think Neal would be a good fit. He is a good player, but I think chemistry wise, it wouldn't work. If Neal is wanting 5M+ it doesn't make a lot of sense, because he'd want a few years too.
Putting Varna on 4th isn't what I'd do. Also now that it is rumored that Beagle isn't coming back, it is time to get some of the guys in waiting to see what they will do for the team.

The Cap
Beagle is one of my favorite players, hands down, but 2.5 million is too much. I think 1.5 or keep it the same at 1.75 for 3 years would make more sense and equal out with the extra year. Kempny will be more than 1.5. I sure don't want anyone to poach him after July 1st. Pay Kempny the $ - probably more like 2.5 at 2 years or 2.25 for 3 or 4. D-men are scarce this year.
Wilson should sign a bridge deal ( I think he is still eligible) and make it a little less that 4M.
What about Travis Boyd - he is a good RFA. I really want to see him get some time with the big club this year as also Walker and I think Stephenson is a lock on the big club now.

I really like the 4 forward lines and Gersich being brought up. Stephenson and Boyd along with Beagle would be a very good 4th line. Somewhat concerned with the 3rd pairing on D. It really doesn't seem like there is a real good alternative for picking up another solid D so lets see what Djoos/Bowey and Johansen can accomplish.

Next season (EDM)
I'm not sure what sending Connolly to Edm for Strome does except increase our cap by 1.5M. If DSP is signed for more than 1.2M I'd say it would be a mistake. DSP was impressive in playoffs but meh in the season. I'd pay him 1.2 x2years at most. We'll need 1 more solid D for insurance.

Everyone else stays
I love Beagle but $3M for 4 is too much. I think we could resign him for 1.5 / 1.75M. DSP did not produce during the year and that is his history. Sign DSP under 1.2 M or trade him. Too many others knocking at the door and they need a chance to move up. If it is Reirden as the next coach I am hoping he will play the younger guys - getting them nhl experience and what is expected.

Washington Capitals 2018
Sign DSP for less. As mentioned elsewhere, he has received a bump in pay after a strong performance only to not deliver after. (San Jose / NJ). 800k max. I think Beags would sign for less just to stay for the 4 year deal. Carlson might walk for the 7million. He can probably fetch more, but I sure would like to keep this group together for 1 more year.

Year after
Way over payment on DSP. He was clutch in playoffs but his play during the year is marginal. Top side is fourth line no more. At best 1.2 million per. Kempney more likely to get in the 1.5 to 2.0 million range. Wilson also is an overpay. Tom needs to learn to take less penalties. I know he is a marked man with the refs; he needs to be able to control his emotions. 3.5 million tops for Wilson. Grubbi's contract should be figured out by the team that lands him.

Back..to...Back
I know DSP has had a great playoff, but I'd keep Connolly over DSP. Connolly has more offensive upside, speed, shooting ability, can catch a pass on the fly and can handle a puck. DSP was continually loosing the puck battles.
