Description
A trade in Jan-Feb timeframe. Oilers find themselves 3rd in the Pacific based on strength of a rebound year from Cam Talbot. But they need further experienced depth on D and speed on the wing to ensure they don't miss the playoffs, which would cause Chiarelli and McLellan to lose their jobs. Ethan Bear and Evan Bouchard not ready yet for big minutes on right D, so Petry is a good fit.

Habs are already out of the playoff picture at that point. Looking to move a pending UFA, and with Weber back and healthy at right D, Petry becomes a valuable trade asset while his stock is up. He's willing to waive no-trade clause for a few years with a rising team in EDM. Habs looking mainly for extra lottery chips in the 2020 Lafreniere draft year

I don't really think it is.

Byron is atleast worth a 2nd

So Petry = Upgrade from 2nd round pick to 1st + Benson + 4th?

It all depends on what overall the Oilers pick is, but I don't agree it is that nice for Montreal

The comparable trade I'm looking at was Travis Hamonic to Calgary. He was a proven top-4 defenseman with 3 years left on a reasonable contract ($3.9M AAV). The package Calgary gave up for him was a 1st rounder and 2 second rounders. Petry is comparable value but 4 years older (31 versus 27)

Ultimately the Habs may be offered more, nobody knows for sure. But teams hate giving up first rounders.

That pick will probably end up in the 15-25 range, so it's not necessarily huge value. By the way Tyler Benson is a pretty good prospect too. Probably 2nd or 3rd line LW would be his ceiling at NHL level, but a useful player with good upside.

Habs fans are way too picky! You've got a deal but I propose a small change from a Habs point of view... I much rather the 2019 than the 2020
