Description
Here's an idea I've been kicking around. LA apparently had some interest in Patches but the price wasn't right. LA also needs cap relief to take Patches on and likely going into next season (how are they gonna pay for a raise they just gave a certain D man without making a move?) So LA gives up Clague and Phaneuf which does leave a hole in their top 4 D. Habs send back Max (retain half) and Mike Reilly, who can play Top 4 and is an RFA (and thus cheaper and controllable). So the Kings end up with another top 6 winger, a cheaper top 4 D option, and about 3.75m in cap space to go towards next year or a TDL pick up if they feel the need. Habs get a guy who can play top minutes now (that's Phaneuf) to let Mete and their other prospects develop without being overwhelmed. The real prize is Clague. A (temporary) Phaneuf-Weber top pairing may be the oldest in the league, but hey, that's a rebuild for ya. I've sprinkled some conditional picks into this trade just to make people smile.

Anyways, Kings fans, let me know. The real X factor in all this will be whether or not Max is willing to extend at a price the Kings think is reasonable. We don't know, so if you post a complaint about how LA will never extend Max, or Max will never sign an LA offer, I'm going to respond to your comment with random Queen lyrics.

A lesser X factor is the role Phaneuf's NTC plays. Comments about how he'll never go to Montreal because it's a tire fire shall be met with ABBA lyrics.

Maybe so but I think the Habs need to look at their LHD situation and soon. Mete and Reilly add good guys but I’m not sure they can be top 2.

It really depend son development but as of right now, Mete is a 2nd pairing LD and Reilly is a 3rd pairing LD. I'd be super happy with both at that position but we still (desperately) need a number 1 LD

Yeah, there's a bunch of prospects too that are going to start pushing their way into the AHL and maybe the NHL in the next year or two, but no bona fide LHD stud that I can see.

This is an interesting one. With Alzner and Phaneuf on left side Habs will stay close to bottom of standings for a few more years and get good draft picks. Meanwhile Mete/Clague/Juulsen have a bit of protection to mature without being too exposed in the top 4 all the time.

By 2021-22 the torture is almost over and you've got a solid core of young top 3-4 defenders going forward as the Habs forwards start to reach their prime.
